Pelvic floor therapy is a specialty area that requires additional training outside of a standard degree in occupational therapy or physical therapy. While general occupational and physical therapists treat a broad range of health conditions, pelvic floor therapists’ focused training allows them to assess and address various pelvic health conditions, the muscles of the pelvic floor, along with related structures, posture, and breathing considerations.
Occupational therapists have a unique foundation in task analysis, task modification, and an understanding of complex psychosocial factors, positioning them as ideal pelvic health providers for comprehensive and effective pelvic health treatment approaches. This unique skill set ensures a holistic approach to address the unique needs of individuals experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction.

Because Georgia offers direct access to occupational therapy services, you do not need a referral to receive pelvic floor therapy from Restorative Foundations. However, your insurance may require you to have a referral in order to qualify for reimbursement. It is your responsibility to determine your insurance’s requirements for reimbursement from an out-of-network provider.

Before your comprehensive evaluation, we will complete a free consultation to discuss your symptoms and concerns and ensure our practice can effectively meet your needs. You will receive intake forms to fill out before your evaluation. The initial evaluation, taking place in the comfort of your home, consists of a comprehensive assessment of your posture, breathing, and muscle coordination. An internal exam may be completed but is always optional. It’s important to note that a comprehensive and effective treatment plan can be developed without an internal exam. Treatment may involve manual therapy techniques, nervous system regulation, targeted exercises, and education on strategies for modifications tailored to address your specific pelvic health needs.

The duration varies based on individual needs and the nature of the condition. Treatment plans are personalized, but many individuals experience improvement within a few sessions. Because we can provide full 60-minute, one on one sessions of personalized therapy our patients typically see faster results than a traditional clinic with divided care and shorter sessions.
